Motivation – Self and Selftranscendence

It has been presumed for many years that satisfying lower order needs of workers ‐ adequate food,
clothing and shelter, etc. are key factors in motivation. However, it is a common experience that the
dissatisfaction of the clerk and of the Director is identical ‐ only their scales and composition vary. It
should be true that once the lower‐order needs are more than satisfied, the Director should have
little problem in optimizing his contribution to the organization and society. But more often than
not, it does not happen like that. ("The eagle soars high but keeps its eyes firmly fixed on the dead
animal below.") On the contrary, a lowly paid schoolteacher, or a self‐employed artisan, may well
demonstrate higher levels of self‐actualization despite poorer satisfaction of their lower‐order
needs.
This situation is explained by the theory of self‐transcendence propounded in the Gita. Selftranscendence
involves renouncing egoism, putting others before oneself, emphasizing team work,
dignity, co‐operation, harmony and trust – and, indeed potentially sacrificing lower needs for higher
goals, the opposite of Maslow.
"Work must be done with detachment." It is the ego that spoils work and the ego is the centerpiece
of most theories of motivation. We need not merely a theory of motivation but a theory of
inspiration.
The Great Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore (1861‐1941, known as "Gurudev") says working for love
is freedom in action. A concept which is described as "disinterested work" in the Gita where Sri
Krishna says,
"He who shares the wealth generated only after serving the people, through work done as a sacrifice
for them, is freed from all sins. On the contrary those who earn wealth only for themselves, eat sins
that lead to frustration and failure."
Disinterested work finds expression in devotion, surrender and equipoise. The former two are
psychological while the third is determination to keep the mind free of the dualistic (usually taken to
mean "materialistic") pulls of daily experiences. Detached involvement in work is the key to mental
equanimity or the state of "nirdwanda." This attitude leads to a stage where the worker begins to
feel the presence of the Supreme Intelligence guiding the embodied individual intelligence. Such depersonified
intelligence is best suited for those who sincerely believe in the supremacy of
organizational goals as compared to narrow personal success and achievement.

Utilization of available resources

The first lesson of management science is to choose wisely and utilize scarce resources optimally.
During the curtain raiser before the Mahabharata War, Duryodhana chose Sri Krishna's large army
for his help while Arjuna selected Sri Krishna's wisdom for his support. This episode gives us a clue as
to the nature of the effective manager ‐ the former chose numbers, the latter, wisdom.

Work Culture

An effective work culture is about vigorous and arduous efforts in pursuit of given or chosen tasks.
Sri Krishna elaborates on two types of work culture – "daivi sampat" or divine work culture and
"asuri sampat" or demonic work culture.
Daivi work culture ‐ involves fearlessness, purity, self‐control, sacrifice, straightforwardness, selfdenial,
calmness, absence of fault‐finding, absence of greed, gentleness, modesty, absence of envy
and pride.
Asuri work culture ‐ involves egoism, delusion, personal desires, improper performance, work not
oriented towards service.
Mere work ethic is not enough. The hardened criminal exhibits an excellent work ethic. What is
needed is a work ethic conditioned by ethics in work.
It is in this light that the counsel, "yogah karmasu kaushalam" should be understood. "Kaushalam"
means skill or technique of work which is an indispensable component of a work ethic. “Yogah" is
defined in the Gita itself as "samatvam yogah uchyate" meaning an unchanging equipoise of mind
(detachment.) Tilak tells us that acting with an equable mind is Yoga.
(Bal Gangadhar Tilak, 1856‐1920, the precursor of Gandhiji, hailed by the people of India as
"Lokmanya," probably the most learned among the country's political leaders. For a description of
the meanings of the word "Yoga".)
By making the equable mind the bed‐rock of all actions, the Gita evolved the goal of unification of
work ethic with ethics in work, for without ethical process no mind can attain equipoise. The guru,
Adi Sankara (born circa 800 AD), says that the skill necessary in the performance of one's duty is that
of maintaining an evenness of mind in face of success and failure. The calm mind in the face of
failure will lead to deeper introspection and see clearly where the process went wrong so that
corrective steps could be taken to avoid shortcomings in future.
The principle of reducing our attachment to personal gains from the work done is the Gita's
prescription for attaining equanimity. It has been held that this principle leads to lack of incentive for
effort, striking at the very root of work ethic. To the contrary, concentration on the task for its own
sake leads to the achievement of excellence – and indeed to the true mental happiness of the
worker. Thus, while commonplace theories of motivation may be said to lead us to the bondage or
extrinsic rewards, the Gita's principle leads us to the intrinsic rewards of mental, and indeed moral,
satisfaction.

Gita Saar for Management Gurus (In Short)

One of the greatest contributions of India to the world is Holy Gita which is considered to be one of the first revelations from God.
Bhagavad‐Gita the essence of Vedic Literature and a complete guide to practical
life. It provides "all that is needed to raise the consciousness of man to the highest possible level."
Arjuna got mentally depressed when he saw his relatives with whom he has to fight.
(Mental health has become a major international public health concern now). To motivate him the
Bhagavad Gita is preached in the battle field Kurukshetra by Lord Krishna to Arjuna as counseling to
do his duty while multitudes of men stood by waiting. It has got all the management tactics to
achieve the mental equilibrium and to overcome any crisis situation. The Bhagavad Gita can be
experienced as a powerful catalyst for transformation. Bhagavad Gita means song of the Spirit, song
of the Lord. The Holy Gita has become a secret driving force behind the unfoldment of one's life. In
the days of doubt this divine book will support all spiritual searches. This divine book will contribute
to self reflection, finer feeling and deepen one's inner process. Then life in the world can become a
real education—dynamic, full and joyful—no matter what the circumstance. May the wisdom of
loving consciousness ever guide us on our journey? What makes the Holy Gita a practical psychology
of transformation is that it offers us the tools to connect with our deepest intangible essence and we
must learn to participate in the battle of life with right knowledge?
The Holy Gita is the essence of the Vedas, Upanishads. It is a universal scripture applicable to people
of all temperaments and for all times. It is a book with sublime thoughts and practical instructions on
Yoga, Devotion, Vedanta and Action. It is profound in thought and sublime in heights of vision. It
brings peace and solace to souls that are afflicted by the three fires of mortal existence, namely,
afflictions caused by one's own body (disease etc), those caused by beings around one (e.g. wild
animals, snakes etc.), and those caused by the gods (natural disasters, earth‐quakes, floods etc).
Mind can be one's friend or enemy. Mind is the cause for both bondage and liberation. The word
mind is derived from man to think and the word man derived from Manu (Sanskrit word for man).
"The Supreme Lord is situated in everyone's heart, O Arjuna, and is directing the wanderings of all
living entities, who are seated as on a machine, made of the material energy."
There is no theory to be internalized and applied in this psychology. Ancient practices spontaneously
induce what each person needs as the individual and the universal coincide. The work proceeds
through intellectual knowledge of the playing field (jnana yoga), emotional devotion to the ideal
(bhakti yoga) and right action that includes both feeling and knowledge (karma yoga). With ongoing
purification we approach wisdom. The Bhagavad Gita is a message addressed to each and every
human individual to help him or her to solve the vexing problem of overcoming the present and
progressing towards a bright future. Within its eighteen chapters is revealed a human drama. This is
the experience of everyone in this world, the drama of the ascent of man from a state of utter
dejection, sorrow and total breakdown and hopelessness to a state of perfect understanding, clarity,
renewed strength and triumph.
Mind is very restless, forceful and strong, O Krishna, it is more difficult to control the mind than to
control the wind ~ Arjuna to Sri Krishna

In this modern world the art of Management has become a part and parcel of everyday life, be it at
home, in the office or factory and in Government. In all organizations, where a group of human
beings assemble for a common purpose irrespective of caste, creed, and religion, management
principles come into play through the management of resources, finance and planning, priorities,
policies and practice. Management is a systematic way of carrying out activities in any field of
human effort.
Its task is to make people capable of joint performance, to make their weaknesses irrelevant, says
the Management Guru Peter Drucker. It creates harmony in working together ‐ equilibrium in
thoughts and actions, goals and achievements, plans and performance, products and markets. It
resolves situations of scarcity, be they in the physical, technical or human fields, through maximum
utilization with the minimum available processes to achieve the goal. Lack of management causes
disorder, confusion, wastage, delay, destruction and even depression. Managing men, money and
materials in the best possible way, according to circumstances and environment, is the most
important and essential factor for a successful management. It should literally transform how people
think and help them finally realize the potential of a truly universal knowledge that is wisdom.

Bhagavad Gita and Management World Management Lessons from India

The despondency of Arjuna in the first chapter of the Gita is typically human. Sri Krishna, by sheer
power of his inspiring words, changes Arjuna's mind from a state of inertia to one of righteous
action, from the state of what the French philosophers call "anomie" or even alienation, to a state of
self‐confidence in the ultimate victory of "dharma" (ethical action.)
When Arjuna got over his despondency and stood ready to fight, Sri Krishna reminded him of the
purpose of his new‐found spirit of intense action ‐ not for his own benefit, not for satisfying his own
greed and desire, but for the good of many, with faith in the ultimate victory of ethics over unethical
actions and of truth over untruth.
Sri Krishna's advice with regard to temporary failures is, "No doer of good ever ends in misery."
Every action should produce results. Good action produces good results and evil begets nothing but
evil. Therefore, always act well and be rewarded.
My purport is not to suggest discarding of the Western model of efficiency, dynamism and striving
for excellence but to tune these ideals to India's holistic attitude of "lokasangraha" ‐ for the welfare
of many, for the good of many. There is indeed a moral dimension to business life. What we do in
business is no different, in this regard, to what we do in our personal lives. The means do not justify
the ends. Pursuit of results for their own sake is ultimately self‐defeating. ("Profit," said Matsushitasan
in another tradition "is the reward of correct behavior." – Ed.)

English Translation (Conversation between Lord Krishna and Kaliya Naag`s wife)

Kaliya naag`s Wife :

Leave this river full of lotuses,
child You might wake up our master fast asleep.
He will definitely not spare you if he wakes
Moreover, the sin of murdering a mere child will be on our heads!

Leave this river.."

Tell me, boy, have you lost your way, or has some foe led you astray?
You seem to have run out of your time, dear child, Or else, why would
you ever think of coming here?

Leave this river.. "

Krishna`s Answer : No I haven't lost my way and no foe can lead me astray, O consorts of Cobra, back there in
Mathura I just happened to lose your man's head in a friendly bet!"

Kaliya naag`s Wife : Leave this river.. "You are so cute, so pretty, so irresistible!
Tell us how many children your mother has So that you are unwanted?

Leave this river.. "

Krishna`s Answer : I am Natwar, the younger of two brothers Go and
wake up that snake of yours I am Krishna- the dark one!"

Kaliya naag`s Wife :

Leave this river.. "
Come, come, we will give you garland worth lakhs,
We will give you necklace made of pure gold, Without letting our master know!"

Leave this river.. "

Krishna`s Answer : What am I to do with that garland of yours?
Pray what is the use of that necklace to Me? And why should you
pilfer in your own house, O serpents?'

Kaliya naag`s Wife :

Leave this river.. "
Distraught they shook up the sleeping master by feet, They wrenched him by his
whiskers in great distress

"o Wake up master", they said
"there is child at our door"

The two powerful ones were locked in mortal combat, In no time Krishna mastered the colossai cobra,
His thousands hood hissing furiously
LIke the thundering lunar constellation in monsoon

"He will torture our Cobra" the wives lamenetd
"he will take him to Mathura and behead him
O forgive our husband" they pleaded
"We ignorant sinners could not recognize you
We could not fathom you, O lord"

They offered pearls in devotion and somehow managed to rescue
their seized husband from Narsaiyaa`s lord.

Krishna then forgives and ask them to leave Yamuna

Site Diversion

After spending 10 long days of learning html coding since
i made my site on 8th of Feb.
Finally i decided that the easiest thing i can do is to divert my site
to my blog site which is this right now.
So if you open >>> http://www.journeywithmyself.com/
you will see my blog page only. I did this because I don`t like that
"Site is Under Construction Section"

I tried dreamweaver too with the help of my cousin Vebby but all in vain.
Kat told me to first make complete website and then launch it.

Meanwhile Rat diverted it to get rid of this issue temporarily.
Now I can conentrate on blogging.

Ooo God.. In the complex world of coding.. I gonaa almost forget my wrtting ability.

Thank you Kanha for saving me..

Explanation
O! Shri Yamunaji, you are like Shri Laxmiji, who has good fortune. But no one is capable of praising you, because any one serving God first and then Shri Laxmiji gets all happiness after death also Mamoxataha. But the importance of Shri Yamunaji is the best. Here Shri Maha Prabhuji explains the exaltation of soul just by bathing in the waters of shri yamunaji which becomes pious daily by the “Ras-Lila of Lord with the vraj-bhakts”. By serving Shri Yamunaji we get blessing from her, which is helpful in exalting our soul and making pious. As we wash our body from outside to make it look pretty, we need to have blessings in form of Shri Yamunaji’s river water to wash our soul and body from within. Due to her blessings our mind and thoughts becomes favorable to serve Shri Krishna.

O God, I want more

I don`t want to accept this life as it comes. I just want to make this life the way i want.
I know Living on my terms is not possible but I just wish to and try to and I will always do..
Accepting the fact sometimes is bit diffiult for me and I resist change a lot.
God up there, my krishna bhagwaan keep on testing me by passing me through difficult times and
I always pray him to be fair to me as I am here only because he wants, so he only has to take care of me.

He is the one who will fulfill all my wishes and dreams. I say sorry for all my mistakes and thank you
for everything i have daily and being human I want more too.

Please understand and accept me..
I am yours and you are mine.

Radha Krishna

Krishna was with all the devos in sabha. He started to vibrate and from his own body his shakti came out in the form of Radha. She was so beautiful, and Krishna was so shyam. Someone made fun of their couple. Radha got angry and cursed him. That same person cursed Radha and said she will never be able to unite with Krishna (will not get married).

However, there is the story of Radha and Krishna getting married by Brahma in the forest.

Radha is Krishna's energy/shakti. He cannot live without her, and she cannot live without him. She is not a woman, nor a jiva. She is a part of Krishna. She did not take birth. She emerged from him. Literally, they are one. You cannot have an image of Krishna alone. Krishna alone is incomplete without his Radha.

In some descriptions, radha was actually a married woman. it was she who is said to indulge in an affair with krishna. even if it was not so, the relationship of radha and krishna were on a different plane, and they were actually the same being, just god in the form of man and woman. their love was pure and spiritual, and cannot be purified further by the bond of marriage.

Radha and Krishna are said to be one. Their love is eternal. What is marriage? Marriage is a sacrament (Sanskara), a rite enabling two individuals to start their journey in life together. In a Hindu wedding, the multiplicity of creation becomes possible when spirit (Purush) unites with matter (Prakritti). Krishna and Radha being one did not need the basis of marriage.

This is of course my point of view, from what i have read and gathered. I myself am totally in love with Lord Krishna.

Confused . . ? ?

I dont know what is my present state of mind.. What I want & What I dont? ?
I cant be able to concentrate on anything not in my job.. in my studies.. in my relationship.. in my family.. & in my friends.
I cant stand this even. Its killing me now. Sometimes I feel so restless & start crying loudly lyk hell.
I feel so left out and all alone standing in some isolated space wondering the life`s decision which we have to accept no matter what.
I know I sound so depressing & i should just give all my worries to my God "Lord Krishna" and start meditating to avoid this negative feeling but I just simply dont know how to do it..??
Lots of thgs goes unquestioned
Lots of thgs goes unanswered
& I have no control over anything.

Why this life sucks to the most when needed the most?

Hey Krishna.. I dont want too much

Its been like this all the way through.

Just work hard for another x no of days/months/years and then ur life will be a lot better,I AM TOLD.work hard during 10th boards, ull get a stream of ur choice, n life is better.work hard during 12th boards, n ull get into a good college n ur life will be better still.work hard fr MBA,ur life will be gloriously better than ever.

this is what i was told,or rather i imagined them to be true.

but today when i am lounging here in office PC,i pause to wonder-
Is my life better,or is it just my CAREER which is better?

I admit that i suspect my career is on the right track n ill be able to feed my children two meals a day n send them to a decent english medium school.but my life is much more, more than just career.

Maybe I m not Ambitious. I dont know if this is a normal thing but I am happier eating dal-chawal sitting on the floor at my home rather than having lunch at the Taj with Vice president of a multinational .I feel happier sitting on the kitchen floor chatting with mum rather than brainstorming at some air conditioned office.I prefer watching Romantic Movies rather than watching powerpoint presentations at a corporate meeting.
I know that i need money.everybody does.but its just an instrument to get what you want,to make ur family happy being one of them.n if u sacrifice these ultimate sources of happiness for money,well..then, I dont get the idea.its like having a pen but not having the time to write a poem.i see old couples living alone, supporting each other's frail lives while their successful children are attending meetings at the silicon valley.it is said that the best ne parent can wish for is the child's success, but i dont accept that this old mother who spent her life caring for this child, and is now left to live her life hoping that the child will remember to call her from his apartment in california, doesnt feel the hurt.

so i just hope that i am not so "successful",that i dont care for the little but real joys of life.i dont want a big car or a mansion or a job which pays me like crazy but makes me crazy with all the workload.

yea,i can do without a great CAREER , but give me a great LIFE god.

Where's my purpose , dude ?

P.S. : Any use of words with violent or abusive connotations is due to a lack of breakfast and a shoulder pain resulting from the awkward position I slept in LAST NIGHT.

First of all , I am not sad . I have a decent career taking off , a family I love , friends I love, and my moto ming bluetooth headset I am beginning to love. So it would only take a couple of Himesh Reshammiya's CDs to make me feel sad . On a related note , I yesterday saw the video of "teri yaad na aye" from Himesh on MTV . The guy is crying lakes in the video . I had this urge to actually reach into the screen , wipe his face with a tissue and say "Na munna na , sab theek ho jayega ."

But even though I am not sad , I have a little thought nibbling on me this morning . The more I live , the more I realise two things . First , I still don't have a 'purpose' in my life . And second , now that I have lived some more , I have lesser time to find that purpose .It is like 3 years back I was "Chill yar" . I am only 18 . Only Lord Krishna found a purpose in life at that age." But Now I am like "Umm . I am almost 21 . And I think I will find a bigger meaning in life right after a little nap. "

Sure , I have phases of 'being driven' in my life . Like I wake up and say 'Right . Today I will call the Hutch Customer care people and tell them they should be looting banks in ski masks and not calling themselves a telecom service provider for all the scary things they are doing to my connection'.

" Oh right . Now all the things that seemed stupid and mundane to me make sense".I don't have a purpose which unites all the things I do and drives me and makes me say "Oh yeah , so this is what it was all about". In fact , that's the problem bugging me right now . I don't know what's it all about .Maybe there isn't supposed to be a purpose , a bigger meaning in life . Just live , have fun , eat good chinese food , watch movies , and of course , there is a moto ming headset .

Starting a Monday with such things I can almost imagine Lord Krishna sitting up there on a cloud and shaking his head and telling me "Take it easy kid ".
You know naa what that means for a working chap ?

So gulp some sandwiches and a hot coffee and everything will make sense & start working .

All the kids please get up and clap because my breakfast is finally here . And nothing gets in between a hungry me and a hot breakfast . So now yours truly will step back into the big bad corporate world . Let's pacify the rats in my tummy now . As for the purpose of life ...umm....pehle kha leti hoon !
