Why do I write Blogs?

I write every single day and I think writing daily has allowed me to do it for a purpose.

None of this is to brag, but to show the kind of writing I do when I write daily.

The Benefits

Writing every day has helped me in so many ways. Just to name a few:

  • My writing skills have improved with the years.
  • I’m able to write faster, type faster, with so much practice.
  • I can clarify my thinking better because of writing regularly.
  • I’m able to think from the reader’s perspective, which helps me in lots of life situations.
  • I am forced to reflect on my life, which deepens my learning.
  • I am forced to figure out how to motivate myself to write regularly.
  • I learn to create a regular practice, as I do with meditation, exercise and eating healthily.
  • I learn to overcome perfection and put things out there to be judged, which helps me to embrace failure and messiness.
  • I learn to overcome distraction and procrastination.

There are many more benefits too, from embracing uncertainty to find a way to express the soul of my being.

So how do you write daily? I’ll share a few ideas that work for me.

How to Write Daily

What works for you will be different than what I do, but I thought I’d share what has helped me:

  1. Most important: Have a great reason. The rest of this doesn’t matter if you skip this step.
  2. Block off un distracted time. All you need is 10 minutes a day. But you have to block off those 10 minutes, and treat them as an unmissable appointment.
  3. Don’t let yourself forget. What would you do if you absolutely couldn’t forget an appointment?
  4. Do it in a sprint. Some people think they need to write for an hour or two to make it count. But a task that big will seem daunting. Instead, write for 5 minutes. Or 10. Something small and doable.
  5. Practice mindfulness. You can treat writing as a meditation — it’s a way to put everything aside but you and the writing, to let your thoughts become words on the page, to see your urges to run, the stories you’re telling yourself about yourself and your life.
  6. Practice gratitude. As you practice mindfulness, notice the awesomeness of this moment of self-expression.
  7. Embrace imperfection. Writing is about letting go of our ideals, and just doing anyway, even if we can’t have perfection.
  8. Don’t let your mind run (for a little while). Your mind will want to run from the writing. This is normal.

So that might seem like a lot, but in truth it’s pretty simple. Have a big reason, block off the time, set unforgettable reminders, do it in short bursts, and be mindful, grateful, and focused.

Practicing this on a daily basis helps you form some incredibly useful skills of staying with something and not running to distractions, learning to express yourself, sticking to a regular habit, and being mindful and grateful. These help in all areas of life, and I highly recommend you start today.

I dare you to…

10 Things I Dare You To Do Today
What you do every day is already important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it.  But today, I dare you to take it up a notch, pump some extra life into every hour, and really make your time count.
Today, I dare you to…
  1. Make someone else smile. – Ordinary people worry today and postpone their happiness for tomorrow.  Intelligent people are happy today and postpone their worries for tomorrow.  Wise people only wish happiness for all, today and tomorrow.  If you wish to have a lifetime of happiness, dedicate time every day to helping others smile with complete sincerity and enthusiasm.
  2. Be imperfect. – Something that is really difficult, but totally worth it, is giving up on being perfect and beginning the journey of becoming your true self.  The most beautiful part of this journey is simply returning to the peaceful feeling of being.  This peace is the result of retraining your mind to process life as it is, rather than as you think it should be.
  3. Be enthusiastic about what you’re doing. – You’re not given a good life or a bad life.  You’re given life, and it’s up to you to make it good or bad.  So wake up and get motivated; not everybody made it to today.  Don’t take your time for granted.  Don’t waste time thinking back to whatyou could have done differently yesterday.  Keep your eyes on the road ahead and do it differently today.  Wherever the road takes you, bring your passion.  Whatever you do along the way, do it with all your heart.
  4. Make the best of what happens. – More important than what happens to you, is what you make of what happens to you.  The more thankful you are, the more beautiful this world appears.  You must uncover the good in the bad, the happy in your sad, the gain in your pain, and what makes you grateful not hateful.
  5. Forgive your past self. – Sometimes, good people like you make bad choices.  It doesn’t mean you’re bad; it means you’re human.  So get bored with your past; it’s over.  Forgive yourself for what you think you did or didn’t do, and focus on what you will do starting now.
  6. Spend some time simply being and breathing. – The only way to live happily ever after is one day at a time.  Just be, breathe, and think not about what you’re missing, but what you’ve been given.  Happiness is something that comes into our lives gradually through the doors we don’t even remember leaving open.
  7. Learn something new. – It’s important to remember that you cannot become who you are capable of being by remaining exactly where you are.  If you are not willing to learn and grow, no one can help you.  But if you are determined to learn and grow, no one can stop you.  In the end, there are no permanent jobs on this planet; we are all interning here.  Learn from everyone, evolve, remain humble, and don’t forget to have a good time.
  8. Look in the mirror, and tell yourself what you love about yourself. – What we see in the mirror is what we see in the world.  Our disappointment in others perfectly reflects our disappointment in ourselves.  Our acceptance of others perfectly reflects our acceptance of ourselves.  Our ability to see potential in others perfectly reflects our ability to see potential in ourselves.  Our patience with others perfectly reflects our patience with ourselves.  You get the idea – you’ve got to show yourself some love first.
  9. Focus on the qualities you like about those around you. – Whenever we focus on a person’s wonderful qualities, we have a wonderful relationship with them.  Whenever we focus on a person’s not so wonderful qualities, we have a not so wonderful relationship with them.  What we focus on grows in our minds and hearts.
  10. Say “yes” to a spontaneous opportunity. – Everything in life can’t be planned.  Some of the greatest opportunities will knock on your door when you least expect them to.  Be flexible, be spontaneous, and just say “yes.”

Mistakes You do When You Blog

Assuming you want to increase your blog traffic, there are certain mistakes you must avoid to be successful. If you commit these mistakes, your traffic will never gain momentum. Worse, it may begin to decrease.

How do I know? I have made most of the mistakes you can make—numerous times. As a result, I have begun to see certain patterns emerge. These are my top ten traffic-killers.

  • Mistake #1: You don’t post enough. Hobby bloggers may go weeks between posts. But frequency is what separates the men from the boys. You cannot build solid traffic without frequent posts. I have seen time and time again (via Google Analytics) that there is a direct correlation between frequency and traffic. The more I post—within reason—the greater my traffic.
  • Mistake #2: You post too much. Yes, this is possible, too. I don’t need to hear from anyone more than once a day—unless it is a group blog or a news site. You would do better to focus on writing one really great post a day rather than several mediocre ones. The trick is to find your frequency sweet spot. For me, it is four to five posts a week.
  • Mistake #3: Your post is too long. You can get away with this if your posts are “scannable”—that is, you make use of subheads, lists, and other devices that keep people moving through your content. If a post starts getting too long, consider breaking it up into several posts.
  • Mistake #4: You don’t invite engagement. When I talk about “engagement,” I am referring to a combination of page views, reader comments, and social media mentions. Postrank.com is a great tool for measuring this kind of engagement. The posts that generate the most engagement for me are those that are controversial, transparent (especially about failure), and open-ended. This is why I try to end every post with a question.
  • Mistake #5: You don’t participate in the conversation. When bloggers don’t participate in conversation by commenting on their own posts and responding to their readers, it is like hosting a party at your home, making a brief appearance, and then disappearing. In any other context, this behavior would be perceived as rude or odd. The same is true in blogging. People want to have a conversation—with YOU.
  • Mistake #6: You don’t make your content accessible. Since I am in the publishing business, I often get asked if I think people are reading less. The simple answer is “No.” In fact, I think they are reading more than ever. But they are reading differently. Readers have shorter attention spans. They are scanning content, looking for items that interest them. When you use subheads, lists of bullets or numbers, it draws readers in by making your content accessible. Shorter paragraphs also help.
  • Mistake #7: You don’t create catchy headlines.  This means your headlines are the most important thing you write. Fortunately for scanning content and deciding whether to read an entire series of posts.
  • Mistake #8: Your first paragraph is weak. This is critical. Assuming that you have written a great headline, people will next read your first paragraph. You must use this paragraph to pull them into the rest of your blog post. Start with a story, a promise, or a startling fact. The idea is to grab their attention and hang onto it. Many bloggers spend too much time trying to setup the post or provide context. Just get to the point.
  • Mistake #9: Your post is off-brand. I have often been guilty of this one. If you are a hobby blogger, you can get away with the occasional post that strays from your primary message or brand. But if you are trying to build traffic, you need to find an editorial focus and stick to it. A tighter focus leads to higher traffic. This is why I have tried to narrow my own focus to three areas: leadership, social media, and publishing. If I want to write on something else (e.g., fitness), I do so through one of these three lenses.
  • Mistake #10: Your post is about YOU. Unless you are a mega-celebrity, readers don’t care about you. Not really. They care about themselves. They want to know what’s in it for THEM. Your personal stories can be a doorway to that, but in the end, the best posts are about your readers’ needs, fears, problems, or concerns. Always ask, “What’s the take-away for my reader?”
There are other mistakes, too; I doubt this list is exhaustive. But I think I have covered the major ones. If you can avoid these, you will be well on your way to increasing your traffic and growing your audience.

Chetan Bhagat

Chetan Bhagat
A former banker turned author, Chetan Bhagat is credited with having helped extend the reach of literature to a broader audience in India.
Seven years ago an Indian investment banker penned a story of three friends at the Indian Institute of Technology, one of the country’s top schools. Soon after, the book became a best seller, hugely popular among India’s college crowd. Same thing happened a year later, when he published his second novel, this time on the life of call center employees .
The books were “Five Point Someone” (2004) and “One Night @ the Call Center (2005).” The former banker is Chetan Bhagat, an author credited with having helped extend the reach of literature to a broader audience in India. While some critics initially brushed off his success as mere fluke, his lasting popularity proved them wrong. Among the country’s teenagers and twenty-somethings, he is little short of a youth icon. Last year, he even made it in Time magazine’s list of “100 Most Influential People in the World.”
His books have gone on to become Bollywood hits, the most successful of which has been “3 Idiots,” a blockbuster inspired by his first novel starring Aamir Khan.
After tackling the sensitive topic of the Gujarat riots in “The 3 Mistakes of My Life,” (2008) and inter-communal marriages in his “2 States,” Mr. Bhagat’s fifth book is set released in October.
The book, “Revolution 2020,” addresses the hot topic of corruption, a theme that resonates loudly in India in the aftermath of the mass anticorruption protests led by social activist Anna Hazare.

Marketing Models in Internet Marketing

The concept of Internet marketing began in the nineties. As technology developed, more consumers began using the Internet for entertainment and research. Businesses adapted to this trend and began advertising their products and services online. Internet advertising boomed with the growth of major search engines including Google, Yahoo, and MSN. People of all demographic groups use the Internet, and companies can easily access a variety of vertical markets.
Internet marketing is growing in leaps and bounds, and advertising strategies are developing. Strategies include search engine marketing (SEM), affiliate marketing, email marketing, display advertisement, social media optimization, online public relations, mobile analysis, viral marketing, web analytics, and interactive advertising.

Search Engine Marketing

This tool optimizes your online marketing by helping you promote your products and services. When people use search engines, they type particular keywords. Companies work with these keywords to make sure that their products are prominent in a user's search result. They market themselves by identifying key words. Search engine marketing can use paid search methods, local search methods, and product search methods.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a web-based technique that utilizes a network of companies or websites. Businesses and websites will market other businesses and websites. This marketing practice rewards affiliates. Affiliate programs compensate relationships in three ways: Cost per Sale (CPS), Cost per Click (CPC), and Cost per Action (CPA).

Display Advertising

Banner ads are display advertisements that are targeted towards a page viewer. Banners are strategically placed where people will see them. You can design and display advertisements yourself, or you can hire a professional. Banners can help your company achieve instant results.

Email Marketing

Email marketing is simple and effective. Businesses can use email marketing to maintain contact with existing clients and to seek out new customers. Emails can be generated quickly to a wide variety of demographics. Companies can send targeted emails based on shopping history, geographic location, and personal information. Sometimes, people prefer to receive emails over other forms of communication. In any case, email marketing comes with drawbacks. Excessive and unnecessary emails are referred to as spam and can be problematic to users and businesses. Because of spam, some email inboxes are set to automatically sort and delete emails from online marketing campaigns. People do not always read email advertisements and will delete them instantly.

Social Media Optimization

Social media optimization (SMO) is a term that refers to a combination of different techniques that are used to promote a business or company. This type of marketing focuses on social networking tools like Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter. Social network sites provide access to a wide variety of people with different backgrounds and interests. People from all over the world join these sites to maintain contact with their friends. SMO matches advertisements with social media users. For example, you can pay to target college students, parents, men, or women.

Interactive Advertising

Interactive advertising describes both online and offline tools that businesses use to recruit potential clients. Offline methods include direct sales calls, interactive television, interactive kiosks, and mobile devices. Email marketing, keyword optimization, blogging, and social networking are some of the online techniques that are used for interactive advertising. You can also choose to use other online methods like video advertising and animations.

Online Public Relations

Public relations help businesses gain exposure and credibility. Businesses employ strategies to connect with the public and ensure that people know what is going on. Companies can present their activities strategically to promote themselves. Online techniques include press releases, article marketing, email marketing, blogs, and syndication.

Viral Marketing

With viral marketing, companies use word-of-mouth and popular social networks to spread awareness of a product. These can be photos, videos, songs, or text messages that capture a viewer's interest or attention. In general, viral marketing techniques will capitalize upon something catchy. These could be parodies of songs, movies, or celebrities. Viral marketing can help a company increase its product or service sales.

Mobile Advertising

Mobile advertising makes use of text messaging. The advantage of this method is that people are likely to read their text messages. A growing number of people have internet-enabled phones and can click directly to a company's website. Mobile advertising is becoming increasingly cost effective.

Ad Serving

Ad serving allows you to be more strategic in how you display your advertisements. This technology allows you to determine what ads make the most money, and you can monitor how all of your advertisements perform. You can use ad serving technology to come up with an effective advertising plans and to increase your efficiency. You can save money by being precise.

Web Analytics

Web analytics include statistical and demographic reports for websites. You can collect data about the number of people visiting your site as well as their personal information. Through web analytics, you can customize your website to expand your markets and to meet the needs of your client base.

@ Cafe Coffee Day

I looked around at all the "couples" who sat around me.Holding hands.Shy smiles.Loud giggles.People in "love" maybe.

Love. As in , the "boy-girl" love.

You would have heard this word."Love"
It is as overused a word. For a bollywood director , "love" must be the greatest invention ever .
My friend says he is in "love" with the girl who works at the second floor of his office.I am told the punjabi girl in my class is in "love" with the hairy south indian guy in the next class. The other day , I saw the boy who hands out the food in my office canteen , with the girl who does the dishes.Maybe , they are in "love" too.
Even the cyber world is bustling with desperate flirts who hope to find "love".
And then this boyfriend-girlfriend thing. Its like a toothbrush. You got to have one.
" Hi , I have brain cancer."
Thats ok , we all gotta die anyways.
"Hello , I got limphoosirkoma of the intestine."
Chill , Rajesh Khanna in "anand" had it too.
"Namaste , my house burned down last night."
Arre tension nahi yaar , these things happen.
"Hey , I dont have a girlfriend."
What ! Why did not you tell me about this ? Oh poor boy , everything will be fine.God can be real cruel sometimes...
So love is like the neighbourhood gossip .Everybody knows about love.Talks about love.
And the way this "love" word is used , leaves me feeling strange.
I feel there are two different aspects. To love someone. And to be loved. It is said "to be loved" is a natural need. And for me , its a need and not love.As long as you want this person or need this person , you dont love him , you love yourself and want "to be loved".Love is not meant to be a selfish thing.Love is much harder and selfless than that.To love is not to wish for someone to be with oneself , but to give up oneself for that someone.Love is not in sharing coconut water on some beach, but in staying thirsty if it helps him.Love is not in him coming to you , but to care for him when you know he would not come to you.
For me , true love is not about the scene with your boy , where white clouds float around your ankles , and a cool breeze flows across the screen , well fed european guys play violins in the background , and you do a salsa with him and kiss him.For me , love's beauty is in being so consumed with it , that you forget your pains and smile , just because he smiled somewhere , aware of your existence no longer.
Love is not about wanting him , but wanting him happiness , with you or without you.
See,I am no authority.I am no love guru .I am no headmaster of the "Institute of Love Matters" ( ILM..doesnt sound bad ).But the way love is seen as some "coochie-coochie-valentines-gift-holding hands" concept leaves me feeling funny.Love is hard.Love is not a punishment which leaves you restless. But it is something which makes you feel a bliss in a punishment , just because he is happy.
I am not looking at any roses placed between yellowed pages. And I do not wish to insult anyone's feelings.Just that I feel, that to love someone is supposed to be something very deep and heartfelt, that when you say "I love you" to a boy, realise the responsibility and commitment it stands for. Its not about you anymore. Its about him.And I am not trying to preach anything here , please. Just that I felt something and wrote it.
